Hong Kong reported 164 confirmed cases on Thursday the highest single-day number ever, while the case tally at Kwai Chung Estate reached 372.

Edwin Tsui Lok-kin, controller of the Centre for Health Protection, said health authorities have yet to identify the infection source for 30 cases, meaning there could be 30 hidden transmission chains in the community.

Among the confirmed cases reported today, 48 were imported from overseas. There were 116 local cases, including 12 with untraceable sources of infection. Another 100 people tested preliminary positive.

Most cases are related to the Omicron variant, and only three to four cases involved the Delta variant, Tsui added.

Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the centre’s communicable disease branch, said the untraceable cases reported today were scattered. They were found in Tai Wo Hau Estate in Kwai Chung, Tsz Ching Estate in Tsz Wan Shan, To Kwa Wan, Ho Man Tin, and Choi Ying Estate in Ngau Tau Kok.

Tsui said the number of cases detected at Yat Kwai House dropped from a peak of 76 to only several cases today, while the number for Ying Kwai House declined from 33 to three cases.

Among the cases with untraceable sources were five students, including an 18-year-old student at Notre Dame College in Kowloon City. The case involved the Delta variant.

The student lives at Ying Hong House at Choi Ying Estate, and health authorities are still investigating if his case is linked to the hamster cluster.

Two other students are from HKTA Shun Yeung Primary School and Man Kwan Pak Kau College.

Other cases with unknown sources included two retirees; a work supervisor of the Highway Department who works in Cheung Sha Wan; a valet boy; a KMB maintenance worker; a domestic helper; and a security guard at Bayview Garden in Tsuen Wan.

Nga Kwai House saw three new cases today, while Hui Kwai House, Chun Kwai House, and Chui Kwai House each reported one more case on Thursday.

At Kwai Chung Estate, so far, 251 cases have been detected at Yat Kwai House, 81 cases at Ying Kwai House; 13 cases at Ha Kwai House; nine cases at Nga Kwai House; four cases each at Chun Kwai House and Hui Kwai House; three cases at Yuk Kwai House; two cases at Chui Kwai House.

Five cases were reported at Chin Kwai House, Pik Kwai House, Luk Kwai House, Pak Kwai House, and Chau Kwai House.
