The world’s busiest airport for cargo, Hong Kong, saw freight volumes decline by 4.2 percent in January to 401,000 tonnes.

“Uncertain global economic conditions contributed to decreases in cargo volume in January,” the airport said.

Imports and transhipments were affected the most, registering 8 percent and 6 percent year-on-year drops, respectively.

Amongst key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from Europe and Southeast Asia decreased most significantly during the month.

In terms of movements, cargo flights in January declined by 1.5 percent to 4,889 take offs and landings.

Hong Kong is not the only airport to have seen cargo traffic decline in January- Heathrow reported a 1.8 percent decline, there was a 4.3 percent decline at Frankfurt and Brussels noted a 3.2 percent drop off.
