The first Chinese medicine hospital in Hong Kong is expected to commence service in phases starting 2025, said Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

Lam delivered a speech on Saturday when attending the 18th World Congress of Chinese Medicine, and said the Chinese medicine hospital is one of the two government flagship projects in the future.

The second one is the testing centre for Chinese medicine, she added. She believed the two projects can make full use of the city’s advantages in the field of Chinese medicine and further strengthen professional cooperation with other regions.

Lam mentioned this medical field is a traditional advantage of Hong Kong, which keeps growing steadily since the handover in 1997.

She recalled that the footing of Chinese medicine in the city’s medical system was confirmed in the policy address announced in 2018, saying its development will be further boosted on policy level.

As suggested in the national 14th five-year plan targeting the sector of life and health, Hong Kong is also planning to build the InnoLife Healthtech Hub in the Hong Kong Shenzhen Innovation & Technology Park in Lok Ma Chau Loop, Lam pointed out.

Chinese medicine will be a key research area there as well, she continued.
