Malaysian Licensed Fireworks Importers, Wholesalers and Operators Association (Pierpyro) appealed the Home Ministry to relax regulations on the sales of fireworks among licensed distributors. Its chair Datuk Abdul Rahman Manan said this include allowing the products to be sold at special section in supermarkets and shopping malls, like the one designated for alcoholic beverages. He said if allowed by the authorities, the sales of permissible and safe fireworks would be handled by trained staff. “By loosening the restrictions (on sales of fireworks), we (Pierpyro) are confident that job opportunities would increase, apart from improving the country’s revenue through tax. “This is because, there is a high demand for fireworks each year, not only among licensed sellers, but also firework display operators,” he said at the launch of the association in Kajang. He said for a start, the association would provide guidance and monitoring service. “Fireworks shows held in conjunction with the festive season, National Day and New Year’s eve would also help in increasing the number of both domestic and foreign tourists visiting our country,” he said. The association would serve as a platform for businesses and government on legal issues and regulations.
