Indonesia on right track to lower greenhouse gas emissions: Siregar

Indonesia has been on the right course to realise its commitment to slashing carbon dioxide emissions in a bid to limit climate change, vice Foreign minister Mahendra Siregar stated.

Indonesia remains resolute to lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 29 percent on its own or 41 percent with international support by 2030, Siregar noted at the Expo 2020 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The vice foreign minister noted that 41 percent of carbon dioxide emissions was equivalent to 1.1 gigaton (1,100 million tonnes of CO2 or greenhouse gas).

Indonesia’s commitment to cutting 1.1 gigaton of CO2 is three times as much as the commitment of Britain, as the host of the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), he stated.

“As a matter of fact, Indonesia is a developing nation and Britain is a developed country. This shows that we have great commitment in this regard, so all the steps we have taken will raise optimism to achieve the goal,” he noted during an online press conference from Dubai on Wednesday night.

In the meantime, Indonesia also rolled out a document of Long Term Strategy for Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050 in which the forestry sector and landscaping are targeted to function as the net carbon sink in 2030.

This will be the pioneering time for the forestry sector, which currently contributes six percent of the carbon emissions in Indonesia, to serve as an important carbon sink and a global solution to the carbon-reduction efforts, he noted.

“This is possible since the deforestation rate in Indonesia has continued to fall to the lowest level in the past 20 years and forest fires also dropped to the lowest level to 28 percent as compared to the earlier level,” he stated.

“In contrast, quite large forest fires erupted in the rest of the world, including in the United States, Europe, and Australia, and contributed significantly to greenhouse gas emissions,” he noted.
