Indonesia plans to hold a professional road bicycle race, the Tour de Singkarak, again in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancelation of the annual sports event this year.

The plan came as the country said it expects that the transmission of the novel coronavirus will slow next year.

“Now we are planning to resume the 12th Tour de Singkarak for the year 2021,” Novrial, head of the Tourism Office of West Sumatra province, said in the provincial capital of Padang on Thursday.

Next year’s Tour de Singkarak is expected to be staged in West Sumatra and Jambi province with a planned extension of the route to another province of Riau, the official was quoted by local media as saying.

Meanwhile, Hendri Agung Indrianto, head of the Marketing Unit of the Tourism Office of West Sumatra province, said that the 2021 Tour de Singkarak would promote tourism as part of efforts to boost the economy, especially in the three provinces.

In 2019, the Tour de Singkarak was held in nine stages with a total distance of 1,378 kilometers.

As many as 108 racers grouped in 18 domestic and international teams took part in the event, which was first held in 2009.
