The health ministry said Thursday that a Chinese man in his 30s who visited the Chinese city of Wuhan has been infected with the new coronavirus, the first case of infection confirmed in Japan amid an outbreak of pneumonia believed to be caused by the virus.

According to the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry, the man, who lives in Kanagawa Prefecture, complained of a fever on January 3 during his stay in Wuhan in China’s Hubei Province. He returned to Japan on January 6 and went to a medical facility in the prefecture on the same day. The man was admitted to a hospital on January 10, but was discharged on Wednesday after he recovered.

The results of a test by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases showed that the man tested positive for the new coronavirus on Wednesday.

Most of the confirmed cases in China have been found to involve people related to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in central Wuhan. According to the ministry, the man reported that he had not visited the market. But he told investigators of the ministry that he had stayed with a pneumonia patient while he was in China.

It is unknown whether that patient was infected with the coronavirus. But a ministry official said, “The man could have contracted the virus from the patient.”
