Japan marked the 8th anniversary of 2011 devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami Monday. During a ceremony in Tokyo, prime minister Shinzo Abe said reconstruction efforts are steadily moving forward and nearing the final phase. More than 18,000 people were killed that day and over 50,000 displaced. The disaster also crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant causing a meltdown. During a ceremony in Tokyo, prime minister Shinzo Abe said reconstruction efforts are steadily moving forward and nearing the final phase.

More than 18,000 people were killed that day and over 50,000 displaced.

It remains unclear when, if ever, the area surrounding the plant will be habitable again.
