Umno will never see total reform if the blame is only focused on former president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said its Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

The former minister said party members need to take collective responsibility for the party’s “catastrophic loss” on May 9, claiming voters rejected Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) as a whole and not just its former chief.

“Although Najib has done a respectable decision to relinquish his post after our defeat, we cannot assume that that alone is enough to revive Umno to its normal state.

“If we do that, it means that we have not learned our lesson. The rejection was not only towards Najib but BN as a whole,” he told a press conference after a special meeting of the party’s supreme council members at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

He said the first vital step to returning the party to its glory days is by admitting that a total change is needed from within.

“We have to accept that we need a complete and total systemic change. What are the changes? I still don’t know.

“We must go through this period of soul-searching before we can think of what kind of changes we must make in the next few years,” he said.

The Rembau MP, however, reminded all 78 BN elected representatives to not forget their responsibilities towards the people who voted for them in the polls.

“We must strive towards becoming a credible Opposition by playing our roles as the people’s leaders.

“Although voters have rejected us, they still have high hopes that we can be a strong, credible Opposition that can be held accountable,” he said.

He said there are many valuable lessons to learn from BN’s election defeat, among which is the views of the public is paramount.

“If there is a clear message, it is that the rakyat are always assessing their government,” he said.

“To become a strong Opposition is not a task we can accomplish overnight because the people’s rejection is still fresh in their minds.

“Regardless, we must prove that we can become a credible alternative to the present-day government in the next five years,” Khairy added.
