Police are looking for two armed men who escaped during a gunfire exchange with police at a condominium in the city last night.

A third man, their accomplice, who took gunshots to his leg and torso, has been taken into custody, city police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said in a statement, without disclosing the name of the condominium.

He added that a semi-automatic Heckler & Koch USP pistol and 35 9mm bullets have been seized from the crime scene.

“The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 8(1) of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties),” Mazlan said.

The law provides for a jail sentence of up to 14 years and nothing less than six strokes of the cane for those found guilty.

Mazlan asked those with information to contact the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115-9999; senior investigation officer Assistant Superintendent Gopal Subramaniam at 012-512-0242; investigating officer Inspector Salina Zulkopli at 011-1233-4405; or the nearest police station.

According to the police commissioner, the incident happened about 8.30pm yesterday when a team of Setapak policemen approached two men in a red Proton Iswara at the unnamed condo who were wanted for investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntary hurt of another using a dangerous weapon.

The third man whose name was unknown to police was trying to exit the condo’s main guard house at that time.

The first shot was fired at police by a man riding shotgun in the car. Both car occupants then ran out towards the main road, releasing another shot at officers near the condominium guard house.

“In self-defence, police returned fire and hit a suspect in the leg and torso,” Mazlan said.
