The Mexican government is considering Singapore’s participation in the development of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Tuesday.

“They are experts in managing ports,” said Lopez Obrador, before meeting visiting Singaporean prime minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Lopez Obrador did not highlight Singapore’s proposed participation in the so-called Development Plan of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, but instead noted that he would look for greater national investment in the project.

“It has to be an agreement based on respect, at first, for the decision of the Isthmus communities, and also considering that there must be more national investment when it comes to the Isthmus,” he said.

Lopez Obrador said he plans an initial investment of over 1 billion pesos (52 million US dollars) in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, an area between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

The project is expected to generate greater efficiency of Mexico’s economic dynamism of the Interoceanic Multimodal Corridor, a link between the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz, through the modernisation of rail, port, air, and highway infrastructure by 2020.
