North Korea will hold a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party at the end of the month, Pyongyang state media announced Thursday, to take place around the same time that leader Kim Jong-un came to power 10 years ago.

The leader chaired a meeting of the single-party politburo, the highest executive body of the regime, on Wednesday where it was decided to convene towards the end of December the “4th Plenary Meeting of the 8th Central Committee of the WPK,” Korean Central News Agency reported on Thursday.

The outlet did not detail the exact dates on which it will take place, but at the meeting, the approval of the political guidelines for 2022 is expected and where Kim’s achievements during his decade at the helm could also be highlighted.

In the politburo session on Wednesday, the North Korean leader stressed that the country has achieved its “major policy targets” thanks to the “correct guidance” exercised by the party, although he also stressed that “difficulties still lie in developing the country’s economy,” according to the KCNA.

Kim also praised the “big successes” in areas “prioritised by our Party” such as agriculture and construction, which have allowed “a foundation for the economic development of the country and the improvement of people’s living standard.”

The state agency did not report any references to the pandemic or the shortage of food and other basic products that the country suffers due to its even more pronounced isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, difficulties that Kim admitted in previous speeches.

Kim pointed out, however, that North Korea next year will “wage a very giant struggle as much as we did this year,” and stressed that the party’s Central Committee will set “dynamic, onward, scientific and detailed” plans for 2022, in addition to instructing other senior officials to prepare for the end of the year meeting.

Kim took command of the North Korean regime after the death of his father and former leader, Kim Jong-il, on December 17, 2011.
