Datuk Seri Najib Razak today cranked up the election war cry, calling Umno members to deliver home a landslide victory in the looming general election. The Umno president, who was in upbeat mood during a close door briefing session ahead of the party’s annual general assembly, said the Barisan Nasional coalition it led “must win big” and it is the best outfit to rule the country. In delivering a strong message for the party to work harder, close ranks and stop party politics, the prime minister said the party would field fresh candidates for the polls and urged old faces to compromise for the sake of the party to ensure a big victory for Barisan Nasional. He also said Umno was almost ready for the looming 14th general Election and preparations for it has never been this detailed. This year’s assembly, he said, would be the launching pad for the polls. Najib also reminded delegates not to focus on party elections and channel all energy towards emerging stronger for the polls. He also stressed that the BN was still the best political outfit to run the country with Umno as the backbone, saying that the party was most organised, well-structured and systematic. BN currently holds 134 of the 222 parliamentary seats. “In his (Najib) speech, he said that BN must win big and it is the only and the best party to rule the country,” minister in prime minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said told reporters after the briefing. She said Najib had also touched on candidate selection for GE14, many of whom are new faces, and reminded party members to compromise on the matter and set aside personal interest. “He asked us to compromise and I think through his speech, more new faces will be introduced,” she said, adding that she agreed that new faces are needed in facing a new political, economic and social landscape. “The landscapes are changing and we need new faces to show for the continuity of Umno’s struggles,” she said. Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Najib had called on the party’s machinery to gear up for the general election. He said the prime minister also reminded grassroot members to work sincerely to ensure Umno’s victory in the general election. “We have our people on the ground and we know what is happening at the grassroots level. We want them to work hard and sincerely to ensure our victory,” he said. On the new faces for the polls, Tengku Adnan, who is also the Federal Territories minister, said Umno would select its prospective candidates based on what the people wants. Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said, in his speech, Najib had also reminded party members to set aside their differences to ensure victory in the coming polls. “The prime minister said if we want to win, we have to act like it. We really want to win big (in the general election)… that was the message that he sent and it is an important statement,” he said. Puad said Najib had also reminded those who wished to contest in the party election to put their thoughts on hold and instead close ranks to face the general election. “This is, as securing victory for GE14, the party’s main agenda at the moment.” A delegate from Kelantan said Najib also reminded them that there was no point becoming candidates if BN loses power in the next election. “He also told us that he would use a new and proven method in selecting candidates although he conceded that it will not be an easy decisison,” he said. He added that Najib also said Umno was almost ready and this year’s assembly would be the launching pad for the next general election. “Najib said Umno must not only be intact but it must also be very well prepared to lead by example.”
