Authorities have approved the construction of another tollgate on a bypass near Cai Lay Town in Tien Giang Province, to recoup capital for a controversial build-operate-transfer road project there.

Nguyen Nhat, deputy minister of Transport, confirmed the news to the Saigon Times today, February 25.

To recover the capital, the project’s investor—National Highway No.1 Tien Giang Investment Co., Ltd—will be awarded the right to collect toll fees at two toll stations: a controversial and inactive existing tollgate on the highway and a planned new one on the bypass.

Toll collection at the existing station is to recover capital for the renovation of a 26.5-kilometer section of National Highway 1, which runs through Cai Lay Town in this Mekong Delta province. Funding for building the 12-kilometer bypass will be recovered through the new tollgate, he added.

If either tollgate recoups the initial investment, that station will be closed, said Nhat.

The ministry said in a report that total investment exceeds VND1.38 trillion. Of this, the bypass costs VND680 billion, and the renovation of the national road more than VND379 billion. Over VND100 billion has been assigned for building the new tollgate, while site clearance costs are over VND219 billion.

The ministry and the relevant units will reportedly discuss the scale and technical issues of the new tollgate project at a meeting this afternoon.
