The 24th tropical storm of this year formed over the Pacific Thursday night, but it is not expected to affect Taiwan, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

Tropical Storm Haikui has grown from a tropical depression into a tropical storm at 8 p.m. Thursday, the bureau said.

The storm, located 904 kilometers south of Hengchun Township in southern Taiwan’s Pingtung County, was moving at a speed of 25 km per hour (kph) in a west-northwesterly direction, the bureau said.

Haikui, which means “sea anemone” in Chinese, is not expected to impact Taiwan, according to the bureau.
