There were no discussions on forming a new government, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim told reporters after his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah earlier today.

Anwar, who was at Istana Negara for nearly one and a half hours, said the discussion with the King was focused on the emergency and measures to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

“That question was not raised at all,” he said when asked whether there were discussions about forming a new government.

“We said the continuation of the emergency will hurt the country. It will not solve the Covid-19 pandemic, and will affect the economy, especially those in the lower-income groups,” said Anwar.

“We see that all the steps needed (to battle the pandemic) do not require an emergency.

“We appealed to Tuanku to prevent the continuation of the emergency, although he said that he would abide by the spirit of the Federal Constitution and follow the advice of the prime minister,” he added.

Pundits had suggested Anwar’s audience with the King might also include a discussion on the forming of a new government, this after he announced last September that he had a “strong, formidable and convincing” support from MPs in his bid to be the next prime minister.

Anwar said he also raised several new developments about Covid-19, especially on the testing, number of infections, and number of deaths during today’s audience, adding that the King was up to date with the current developments.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong will grant audiences to several political party leaders separately over the next two days to discuss the end of the emergency as well as the reopening of Parliament, this coming amid growing public dissatisfaction at the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told FMT his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is set for 2pm today.

Pejuang information chief Ulya Aqamah Husamudin has confirmed that party chair Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be called for an audience with the King tomorrow.

When contacted yesterday, leaders from other parties such as Bersatu, Umno, MCA, MIC and Gerakan said they had not received a similar invitation from Istana Negara.

The audiences come ahead of an emergency meeting of the Malay Rulers next Wednesday to discuss the Covid-19 crisis, according to a Singapore newspaper report.
