Vietjet Air has piloted the IATA Travel Pass, developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), making it the second carrier in Vietnam to pilot using Covid-19 vaccine passports, said Dinh Viet Phuong, managing director of the air carrier, on June 10.

As of today, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air had piloted a Covid-19 vaccine passport programme using the IATA Travel Pass app, which is considered the key to reopening borders and allowing passengers to fly between countries again. However, the pilot programme is seen as a preparatory step only as local health authorities have not formally endorsed vaccine passports.

The app is expected to help travellers store and manage their certifications for Covid-19 tests and vaccines that are required for their entry into any country or destination.

The IATA Travel Pass app works in four functions, featuring a global registry of health requirements, a global registry of testing and vaccination centers, sharing test and vaccination certificates and allowing travellers to manage their digital identity for contactless travel.

All the information will be kept confidential and shared only with the prior consent of passengers, the local media reported.

Before departure, passengers must download the app on their smartphones, create their profile on the app by filling in their personal and flight information and undergo Covid-19 tests or get the vaccines at facilities that have registered with IATA and then share the results with the airlines. The app will help check the eligibility of test or vaccination certificates and easily identify passengers.

Singapore, Panama and Estonia have allowed passengers with the IATA Travel Pass to enter their countries. In addition, more than 30 air carriers have announced piloting the app, including Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed the Ministry of Transport report the solution to the competent agencies to promptly employ the passport programme to help Vietnam open its market and support the recovery of the tourism and aviation sectors.
