Opinion: China should pay attention to history, leave Taiwan alone

China’s reunification dreams are fading thanks to a resurgence of democracy in Taiwan.

Tsai Ing-wen won the recent presidential election by a wide margin despite constant meddling from China.

Taiwan recently passed an anti-infiltration law that is supposed to stop or at least minimise interference in local politics in that country.

China has tried every trick in the book to keep pro-democratic Tsai from winning an election. They wanted to install one of their puppets from the Nationalist Party to be president, but it didn’t work out. The people of Taiwan did not want to lose any of their freedoms. They don’t like the brutal repression of free speech that is going on in Hong Kong.

After the election, Tsai told the people of Taiwan, “We will not become another Hong Kong.” China even started major travel bans in 2018 that stopped large numbers of Chinese tourists from visiting the country. This loss of tourism cost Taiwan almost a billion dollars in lost revenue. Chinese President Xi Jinping is desperate to assert control over Taiwan.

I hope that Taiwan continues to be a beacon of hope for people who seek and desire democratic freedom.

I don’t understand why Taiwan bought so many expensive tanks from the US What they need is missile defense systems and a naval buildup to include modern submarines. China is obsessed with asserting its influence in the China Sea and any country that touches the sea. If the Chinese would read their history books, they would find out that Japan has already tried this power grab back in the 1930s, and it did not work out for them.

You would think they would learn something from history, but they are too busy stealing military and industrial secrets from the US and other countries. It is much cheaper to steal technology than it is to do the research and development on them like we do.

I am glad that the Trump administration is finally trying to work out details on trade agreements. I felt like the American farmer got burned with all of those tariffs. In a perfect world, China and the US would get busy trying to solve climate crises problems instead of posturing for a shooting war 20 or 30 years down the road. Australia is burning up because of climate change.
