PM to lead Malaysian delegation to 38th, 39th Asean Summits and Related Summits

Prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will lead the Malaysian delegation via video conference to the 38th and 39th Asean and related summits, scheduled from October 26th to 28th.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) said in a statement on Monday that the prime minister would be accompanied by Malaysian Foreign minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Senior minister for International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and senior government officials.

“Malaysia’s participation in the Asean Summit reflects its unwavering commitment to Asean in the midst of the region, which is grappling with the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic,” it said.

During the 38th Asean Summit, leaders are expected to discuss Asean’s future direction and community-building efforts, as well as Asean’s key initiatives in response to Covid-19.

In addition, leaders will meet at the 39th Asean Summit on external relations, regional and international issues of common concern, the statement said.

According to Wisma Putra, Asean leaders will also attend the Asean Plus One Summits with leaders from Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, along with the Asean Plus Three Summit and the East Asia Summit (EAS).

During the side sessions the 14th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA Summit) and the 13th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Summit (13th IMT-GT Summit) on August October Ismail Sabri will be accompanied by minister in the prime minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed. The prime minister is expected to lead the 13th IMT-GT Summit.

The theme of the 2021 Summit, chaired by Brunei Darussalam from Asean, is “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper”.
