An evaluation of the implementation of public activity restrictions (PPKM) in seven provinces of Java-Bali Island has indicated a fluctuating trend in COVID development, COVID-19 task force spokesperson Prof Wiku Adisasmito has said.

“In assessing the readiness of the regions in the gradual opening, we need to look at the development of positive cases, healing and death, as well as hospital bed occupancy rates,” the head of the expert team of the task force informed in Jakarta on Thursday.

In addition, he said reporting on community compliance performance at the village level by officers in the local area also needs to be taken into consideration.

Positive cases over the past week in Java-Bali have shown a downward trend in almost all regions, except for the province of Bali, Adisasmito said.

“Bali is still experiencing an increase in positive cases for the last three days,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jakarta and Yogyakarta are still showing a decline in the recovery of confirmed COVID-19 patients, he disclosed.

The death rate has become a challenge for the government and the community because almost all provinces are still showing an increasing trend, except DKI Jakarta, he added.

When observed from the bed occupancy rate, Adisasmito said, all provinces have shown a decline, except for Bali.

“The bed occupancy rate in Bali is still showing an increase over the past week,” he said.

The bed occupancy rate (BOR) at referral hospitals treating COVID-19 patients in West Java has declined to 79 percent following the implementation of emergency community activity restrictions (PPKM), health authorities earlier said.

According to West Java’s Health Agency, the bed occupancy rate at referral hospitals treating coronavirus patients was around 79.54 percent on Sunday (July 18, 2021), a decline from 90.91 percent recorded on July 2, 2021 before the emergency PPKM was implemented.

“The hospital’s bed occupancy rate has consistently declined ever since the emergency PPKM was implemented (on July 3, 2021). This good news has to be accompanied by raising the people’s discipline in carrying out the health protocols, so that the BOR will keep declining until (it reaches) 30 percent, just like before Eid al-Fitr,” head of West Java’s COVID-19 handling task force, Daud Achmad, said in Bandung on Monday.

According to West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, the decline in BOR is inseparable from the government’s efforts towards providing isolation rooms, boosting the number of beds in hospitals, and establishing health facilities.
