Environmental activists have gathered to protest an attempt by Japan to resume commercial whaling operations at the International Whaling Commission conference in Brazil. Japan is one of a handful of countries including Norway and Iceland that continue to hunt whales for ‘scientific’ purposes, before the meat is eaten. Japan argues that whale populations have recovered and the IWC’s has become skewed towards preservation at the expense of the whaling industry.
