A huge fire raged on Friday morning (14 February) at Lorong Semangka near Choa Chu Kang, with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) involved in ongoing firefighting operations that have lasted more than nine hours.

SCDF said in a Facebook post that the blaze involved piles of horticultural wastes. It is approximately the size of a football field and about four storeys high.

It was alerted to the fire at 1.30am, and firefighting operations are still ongoing due to the slow burning of the deep-seated piles, coupled with the abundance of dry vegetation and windy conditions.

Seven emergency vehicles and 50 firefighters have been deployed. Currently, five water jets are being used to bring the fire under control.

In addition, fire breaks, or physical gaps between materials that could burn, are being created with excavators so as to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.
