Seoul mayor Park Won-soon called for an end to all military drills on the Korean Peninsula until the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, to aid a joint bid by North and South Korea to host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

Speaking to foreign correspondents in Seoul, Park said: “I proposed [the cessation] because we need to create a peaceful atmosphere on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia right now so that we can make concrete preparations for bidding to host the Olympics.”

He also called for the easing of sanctions on North Korea to allow for humanitarian assistance and more cultural and sports exchanges.

Relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have largely plateaued after their final summit in September 2018. The two sides have previously agreed to submit a bid to jointly host the 2032 Games.

Park added: “We should strive to change the current stalled situation between the two [Koreas] in order to avoid this crucial golden time being wasted helplessly.”

“It is urgent for us to start preparations for co-hosting Olympic events. We should stop all activities that generate military tensions and conflict.”

“We cannot just watch these escalating moves building up,” said Park. “We need to make an opportunity and I think the joint Olympics preparation will be the first starting point of making peace.”

South Korean president Moon Jae-in has also pushed for a restart to the stalled joint-bid, saying earlier this month: “A joint hosting of the 2032 Summer Olympics will serve as a golden opportunity to show to the world that the two Korea’s consist of one nation and to make a leap forward together.”

Asia is playing an increasingly strong role in the Olympic movement, with the next two Games will be held in Tokyo and Beijing. The North-South Korea’s rivals for 2032 are expected to include a probable bid from India to host the games in either New Delhi or Mumbai.

Major Asia-based sponsors such as Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba and Japanese tyre manufacturer Bridgestone have signed up as commercial partners of the IOC in recent years.

Other bids for 2032 are expected from Germany which has proposed an innovative regional hosting strategy using venues in 13 cities and Egypt, which has an ambitious plan to bid for both the 2032 Olympics and the 2030 Fifa World Cup.
