Singaporeans enjoy tasting Vietnamese lychee

Nearly 50 tonnes of Vietnamese lychee have been exported to Singapore from Hai Phong port and the total export volume is expected to reach 100 tonnes by the end of the litchi season, according to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Singapore.

Vietnamese lychee was sold at a promotional price of SGD5/1 kilogram (equivalent to VND84,000) in the first week and the price increased again to SGD6/1 kilogram in the following week, similar to that of the Chinese product here in Singapore.

Thanks to good quality, Vietnamese lychee has won Singaporean consumers’ trust. After 2 weeks on the shelves, Vietnamese lychee was out of stock at many supermarkets.

Tran Thu Quynh, Vietnamese Trade Counsellor to Singapore, said that since 2018, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Singapore has met many of the state’s major fruit importers to introduce Vietnamese lychee. It has organised fact-finding tours of fruit growing localities in Vietnam for Singaporean importers, including FairPrice group, to explore fruits to be exported to Singapore.

This year, the office collaborated with Bac Giang province, a leading lychee growing locality in Vietnam, to jointly host a workshop to popularise Vietnamese lychee and connect with importers.

In Vietnam, FairPrice’s Sales Representative directly inspected farms capable of packaging and exporting the product, and the first containers of Vietnamese lychee was shipped to Singapore in late May.

Quynh said in next year’s lychee season, her office will collaborate with Bac Giang and Hai Duong provinces and FairPrice Group to organise “Vietnamese Lychee Day in Singapore”.

Currently, the office is working with Singaporean experts to design leaflets to introduce and promote the Vietnamese lychee in preparation for this event.
