Taiwan, HK, and Macau residents no longer need work permits to work in mainland China

Life has been made a good bit easier for those residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan with jobs in mainland China who will now no longer need to worry about applying for or renewing their work permits.

The decision to completely do away with work permits for these types of employees was made last week by China’s State Council and confirmed earlier today by Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Ma Xiaoguang who said that the move was aimed at “providing Taiwanese people with treatment equal to that of their mainland compatriorts in studying, starting businesses, employment and livelihood.”

In the past, working in China for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents meant their employers would have to submit tedious amounts of paperwork for a work permit, which would then expire after two years or become invalid if the worker wanted to switch jobs or cities.

Now, these workers can move to a different mainland city and take a new job much more easily. The change of policy is yet another way in which Beijing is attempting to win over the young people of Hong Kong and Taiwan, who may be concerned with China throwing its authoritarian weight around, but know that the mainland is still where they can find the most opportunities and make the most money.
