Some 77 percent of Taiwanese travellers think that their own country is more welcoming than other nations to visitors, which put Taiwan in third place in global rankings released Thursday by the travel website and metasearch engine Booking.com.

The self-assessed hospitality survey, conducted online over a one-month period from December 14, 2018, asked 21,500 travellers from 29 countries around the world to compare their travel and holiday experiences at home and abroad.

The top four countries in terms of hospitality, as assessed by their own citizens, were Thailand (85 percent), Indonesia (83 percent), Taiwan (77 percent) and Mexico (77 percent), according to the poll.

Meanwhile, Taiwan was selected as the fifth friendliest country in the world in 2018 by customers on Booking.com.

Eluanbi, the southernmost point in Taiwan, was chosen as the most friendly travel destination in the country, according the website.

Among visitors to Taiwan, the most popular types of accommodation in 2018 were bed and breakfasts, hotels and youth hostels, the website said.

The countries rated as the friendliest in the world were Australia, the Czech Republic, Poland and New Zealand, Taiwan, Romania, Hungary, Iceland, Serbia, and Greece, in that order, according to the website.
