Taiwan was the biggest market worldwide for integrated circuit equipment for use in manufacturing in the first quarter of the year, according to data released Tuesday by the global industry association SEMI.

The data showed that shipments to Taiwan of semiconductor equipment for production purposes rose 68 percent in the January to March period from a year earlier to $3.81 billion.

On a quarterly basis, the increase was 36 percent, and Taiwan climbed one place in the SEMI rankings to become the top market worldwide for IC production equipment, according to the data. Market analysts attributed Taiwan’s top place in the rankings to its development of a comprehensive semiconductor manufacturing cluster.

The local semiconductor industry has been investing in production expansion and technology upgrade to maintain its lead among other sectors in the local market, analysts said.

Currently, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is the world’s biggest pure foundry operator, while ASE Technology Holding Co. is the largest IC packaging and testing service provider in the world.

The first-quarter growth in Taiwan’s purchase of IC equipment for production bucked a 19 percent year-on-year downturn and an 8 percent quarterly drop in the global figure, which was $13.79 billion, according to the SEMI data.

After Taiwan, South Korea was in second place with billings of $2.89 billion, and China third with $2.36 billion, a quarterly decline of 8 percent and 13 percent, respectively, the data showed.

North America was ranked fourth and Japan fifth, with billings of $1.67 billion and $1.55 billion, respectively, according to the data.
