Taiwan reports additional local transmission of dengue fever

In a follow-up on the dengue fever situation in Taiwan, the Department of Disease Control announced five new cases of local dengue fever, bringing the total in 2020 to 14.

The newest cases include 1 female and 4 males, aged in their 30s to 70s. One case was from New Taipei City and four from Taoyuan City.

Of the 14 locally transmitted dengue fever cases this year, 13 were from Taoyuan City and 1 in New Taipei City. In addition, 57 imported cases have been reported this year.

The Taiwan CDC says the epidemic situation in Southeast Asia is heating up, and the epidemic situation in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia adjacent to Taiwan is at the peak or epidemic period.

The number of cases is higher than the same period in recent years. The cumulative number of cases in Singapore this year is close to the largest epidemic in the history of the country (22,170 cases in 2013) ; Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar have entered the epidemic period, and the epidemic situation in Vietnam is also on the rise, with the peak in HCM City.
