The extension of the visa-free entry for Filipino travellers to Taiwan is still up for a decision, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

In a statement, the agency said it has conducted an assessment of the programme’s effectiveness along with other departments and submitted it to the executive branch of the government.

“The conclusions and recommendations from the said meetings have been submitted to the Executive Yuan for deliberation, and the final decision will be announced by the Executive Yuan in due time,” it said.

The agency made the statement after newspaper The Filipino Times reported last Sunday that the visa-free programme has been extended for another year.

The report cited Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said the programme will last until July 31, 2020.

Taiwan began the visa-free travel programme for tourists from the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei in 2016 in an effort to offset a slump in tourists from mainland China.
