An award-winning same-sex romantic comedy drama will represent Taiwan at the 92nd Academy Awards, according to a statement by Taiwan’s Motion Picture and Drama Association Thursday.

The 2018 film “Dear Ex” was submitted by the Bureau of Audiovisual And Music Industry Development under the Ministry of Culture (MOC) for Best International Feature Film at the 2020 Academy Awards, the statement said.

Known as Best Foreign Language Film prior to 2020, it is one of the Academy Awards handed out annually to predominantly non-English feature-length motion pictures produced outside the United States.

“Dear Ex” portrays the story of a teenager who navigates a bitter feud between his mother and the same-sex lover of his father, who is also the insurance beneficiary of his recently deceased father.

“Dear Ex” was nominated in eight award categories at the 2018 Golden Horse Awards, which awards excellence in Chinese-language cinema, and helped Hsieh Ying-hsuan win best leading actress for her role in the film, and Lei Cheng-ching for best film editing.

Bali Song, which was composed by DJ Didilong, from the film’s soundtrack also won best original film music at the Golden Horse Awards that year.

The film was selected from a total of 16 movies for “reflecting diverse issues in gender in a popular and humorous way, and portrays milestones and vitality in Taiwan’s contemporary equal rights movement,” the MOC said, according to the statement.

Internationally, “Dear Ex” also received the best new director award at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2018, in addition to being selected for the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy in 2018 and the Busan International Film Festival’s A Window on Asian Cinema segment in the same year, the statement said.

The MOC said it hopes the film will continue its success and win new awards for Taiwan, according to the statement.

The only time Taiwan won an award for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards was in 2001 for the 2000 martial arts film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” with a Taiwanese director and screenwriter.

The 92nd Academy Awards is scheduled to take place on February 9, 2020.
