Typhoon Danas’ threat on Taiwan was lessened late Wednesday as it moved northward, according to the island’s meteorological authorities.

Danas was located at sea about 350 km southeast of Taiwan at 8 p.m. Wednesday and moved northward at a speed of 23 kph, reducing its threat on east Taiwan, according to the authorities.

The land alert for Danas was cleared Wednesday evening and schools across Taiwan will resume classes on Thursday.

However, heavy rain is forecasted in some areas of northeast Taiwan due to the typhoon. Authorities also issued a flood warning for the south-central areas of the island and the coastal low-lying areas in southeast Taiwan.

East Taiwan’s Hualien County said late Wednesday that summer events will take place there on schedule later this week.

The aborigines’ harvest festival will proceed as scheduled on Friday and an art festival will take place as planned on Thursday along the east coast, according to the local government.

Earlier on Wednesday, the county cleared its coast of tourists and banned ships from sailing due to the maritime and land alerts for Danas.
