Malaysians staying overseas with international passports expiring in 2021 will be given a two-year extension for free.

In a statement on Wednesday (9 June), the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore said on Facebook that the extension of Malaysian International Passports (MIP) is to help facilitate a surge in passport renewal overseas.

“Those affected may choose to have the extension stamped at the ‘Observation Page’ or at page 48 (of the passport) at the nearest High Commission/Embassy. There is no fee for the extension,” the statement said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to many countries imposing various travel restrictions, leading to many Malaysians postponing their travel plans. This has caused them to stay longer overseas and some have to renew their passports overseas due to the impending expiration date, the statement added.

Those Malaysians who wish to renew their passports “as per current procedure” can do so. “However, the current waiting time to get a MIP renewal including online renewals will take 8-12 weeks. This is due to high volumes of MIP applications in the system.”

The Immigration of the Malaysian High Commission here has been operating from 8am to 7pm since July 2020.
