Vietnam forecast to earn over $3.3b from tourism in Q1

Vietnam is forecast to earn over 3. 3 billion US dollars from tourism in the first quarter of 2014, up 31.21 percent year-on-year, said the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, during the three-month period, the country is expected to welcome over 2.3 million foreign visitors, an increase of 29.3 percent over the same period in 2013.

In March alone, foreign arrivals to Vietnam are estimated to reach over 709,700 person-times, down 15.71 percent over February but up 20.83 percent over the same period in 2013.

Foreign visitors arrived in Vietnam for tourism purpose hit over 1.4 million people (up 27.14 percent), followed by visiting relative purpose with over 403,800 people (up 35.62 percent) and business purpose 391,500 people (up 28.76 percent), the website of Vietnamese government quoted the ministry as saying.

China topped the list of major sources of foreign tourists to Vietnam during the first quarter, reaching 587,475 person-times ( up 48.94 percent), followed by South Korea and Japan.

China’s Hong Kong witnessed the sharpest growth in visitors to Vietnam during the period with an increase of 325.88 percent year- on-year.

The number of German tourists to Vietnam in the first three months also saw a remarkable increase of 248.79 percent over the same period in 2013.

During the period, domestic tourists reached 13.7 million person-times, up 6.85 percent year-on-year, said the ministry.
