Women will comprise no less than 30 per cent of the senators in Dewan Negara if Barisan Nasional wins the 14th general Election.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will impose a quota of no less than 30 per cent of women senators in the Dewan Negara if Barisan Nasional were to win the necessary majority in the upcoming elections.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, announcing this quota at the Women in Politics Kuala Lumpur 2017 (WIPKL 2017) event today, said this initiative is a good start to ensure good leadership skills in the Upper House.

“It has been a challenge each time we want to decide on candidates… We want to see more women.

“If we could get the necessary majority in the next election, we can impose a quota for the Upper House.

“They must comprise no less than 30 per cent of women senators to begin with… I would like to see this proposal go through,” he said.

Najib expressed hope that BN will get a strong mandate in the elections to ensure this proposal is realised.

He was speaking on the crucial role women play in both family and national wellbeing when he announced this proposal. He received a huge round of applause by the crowd when he announced this.

“We would like to see greater women participation in politics, as their presence would better represent the electorate and make the political process more inclusive, thus strengthening our democracy.

“Umno itself has long relied on its women’s wing to maintain grassroots relationships, particularly in the rural areas, and that is why Wanita Umno is known as the backbone of our party.

“For our nation to progress meaningfully, we cannot leave anyone behindespecially women,” he said.

Najib was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The international conference was organised by Wanita Umno in conjunction with the upcoming Umno general Assembly 2017.

Themed Women and IR4.0 (Fourth Industrial Revolution), Leadership and Substantive Equality, the event saw the participation of more than 1,000 delegates from 18 countries and 27 countries.

Also present at the ceremony was Wanita Umno chief and WIPKL2017 chair Tan Sri Shahrisat Abdul Jalil, Women, Family and Community Development minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim and her deputy Datuk Azisah Mohd Dun, Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Education minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.4
