Yahoo Poll: Will plain packaging be an effective deterrent against smoking in Singapore?

Singapore will soon be emulating Australia’s plain tobacco packaging methods. The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced it will be introducing standardised plain packaging for all tobacco products, possibly from 2020.

Not only will they lack visual flair, the standardised packaging will also carry a much larger health warning label covering at least 75 per cent of the packet.

The new measures are part of MOH’s efforts to curb smoking in Singapore. The ministry said the measures aim to deter non-smokers from picking up the habit and to encourage smokers to quit. More than 2,000 Singaporeans die prematurely from smoking-related diseases each year.

Do you think standardised plain packaging with larger health warning labels will be useful in deterring smoking in Singapore? Have your say in our poll and leave a comment below.
